The pervasive impact of the ‘information society’ and the specific drivers of UK government policy on both their evidential and cultural responsibilities have resulted in unprecedented changes in the role of record-keeping professionals. Producing professionals who can meet these new demands is, at least at the beginning of their careers, the role of the university postgraduate programmes, but achieving it is difficult in light of the sheer pace of change and, in some cases, conflicting views of those roles and responsibilities. Examination of government policy as embodied in the Archives Task Force Report suggests a professional knowledge and skills set radically different to that routinely envisaged by both practitioners and educators; indeed, taken within the context of broader information-related developments such differences may presage the dilution of archives and records management as a discrete discipline, and the fragmentation of the profession overall.
