Does ‘schizophrenia’ exist? Reliability and validity

Abstract

To say that ‘schizophrenia’ does not exist is not to say some people don’t have experiences that are very unusual or diffi cult to understand, and who suffer extreme distress and confusion. The two questions addressed here are different: (a) Does ‘schizophrenia’ meet accepted scientifi c requirements for establishing that a concept exists? (‘reliability’); and (b) Is ‘schizophrenia’ useful in terms of understanding or predicting anything? (‘validity’).
