This chapter first addresses the question of whether Buddhist ethical teachings can be brought under a single ethical theory. It considers opposing answers to this question and then looks at how it is possible to work toward a better understanding of normative teachings in the Buddhist tradition. It discusses the central terms appealed to in Buddhist discussions about how one ought to be and act. It also highlights a common claim of many forms of Buddhism that moral development and the recognition of no-self work together, as the common metaphor has it, like two wings of a bird.
