This publication is based on materials arising out of collaborative work which addresses the question of 'inclusive' education in the context of policy and practice in a number of different countries including Australia, England, France, Greece, Ireland, Scotland, Sweden and the USA. Inclusive education embraces human rights, equal opportunities and social justice. The authors of these papers examine how various societies construct and respond to personal and cultural differences. These emerging issues will help to broaden discussions on the policy and practice of equity and social justice. Following an introduction by the editors, the book contains the following chapters: Inclusive education in Ireland: rhetoric and reality / Patrick McDonnell; Greek policy practices in the area of special/inclusive education / Anastasia Vlachou-Balafouti and Athina Zoniou-Sideris; Sunflowers, enchantment and empires: reflections on inclusive education in the United States / Linda Ware; 'Vive la difference?' Exploring context, policy and change in special education in France: developing cross-cultural collaboration / Felicity Armstrong, Brigitte Belmont and Aliette Verillon; Inclusion and exclusion policy in England: who controls the agenda? / Tony Booth; Inclusion and choice: mutually exclusive principles in special educational needs? / Sheila Riddell; Special education in today's Sweden - a struggle between the Swedish model and the market / Bengt Persson; An international conversation on inclusive education / Jenny Corbett and Roger Slee. The book also has a comprehensive list of references.
