Abstract

This paper explores issues surrounding the inclusion of Torres Strait Island music in school curricula. The major features of Torres Strait Island music are identified, providing a musical and cultural background against which problems and processes pertinent to Indigenous and non-Indigenous students are discussed. Four common issues are presented as 'the four 'C's': consultation, community involvement, contemporisation, and cultural and musical identity preservation.
