A survey of 1,020 members of the New York City Chapter of NASW was designed to discover their attitudes toward social action strategies and their perceptions of the effectiveness of those by middle- and lower-class persons in the fields of housing and welfare reform. It was found that social workers consider themselves most effective when assuming traditional professional roles; they view middle-class persons as most capable in purely political roles and lower-class persons in use of conflict strategies. The author presents an analysis of the findings and discusses their implications for the participation of social workers in future social action movements.
