Alternative Prehistories for Bougainville: Regional, National, or Micronational

Abstract

P, rehistory matters in the North Solomons Province of Papua New Guinea (PNG), or Bougainville as it is still commonly known. As the epi graphs suggest, it is also contested ground. That prehistory (simply meaning here that part of history where the pri mary sources are not written) matters, was brought home to me by a triv ial incident that occurred on 8 January 1990 at the North Solomons Pro vincial Government headquarters in Arawa. I had gone to buy a snack at the small coffee shop there, and on my way in I saw then Premier Joseph Kabui standing outside. He hailed me, and I walked over.
