This chapter discusses information governance (IG) models and policies for long-term digital preservation of data. It takes IG, planning, sustainable resources, and a keen awareness of the information technology (IT) and file formats in use by the organization, as well as evolving standards and computing trends for long-term continuity of digital information. Digital preservation is defined as long-term, error-free storage of digital information, with means for retrieval and interpretation, for the entire time span the information is required to be retained. Building and sustaining the capability to manage digital information over long periods of time is a shared responsibility among all stakeholders. Many digital file formats are proprietary, meaning that content can be viewed and controlled only by the software application used to create, use, and store it. Migration, refreshment, and replication are examples of specific preservation techniques.
