Abstract

Tangata whenua systems of law and government existed before colonization by the British. 'Tikanga Maori' and 'Maori customary law' are terms (not necessarily interchangeable) that embody the values, standards, principles, or norms that indigenous Maori have developed to govern themselves. In this edition there are a number of articles that assert tikanga Maori as the first law of Aotearoa/New Zealand.
