Abstract

A report of a smelting program covering the Zelechovice type of Moravian furnace of the 8th century A.D. and the ScharmbeckDrengsted type of furnace of the first few centuries A.D. Reasonably successful products were obtained with the former but it was found impossible to make the latter work with induced blast. Full details of the ore, method of working and composition of the products is given. The charcoal was made on the site of the experiment and the results of this part of the work form almost the only scientific in formation on the charcoal-making process. -- AATA
