Abstract This paper describes a six-phase framework for integrating computers into the accounting curriculum. The six phases are: 1) Select a strategy 2) Gather information 3) Generate "ideal" specifications 4) Analyze resources and constraints 5) Implement "actual" program 6) Monitor. The method was used for examining the accounting curriculum at the University of Waterloo, Canada and for recommending changes to both the curriculum and teaching practices. This paper outlines the method and illustrates each major step in its application by use of specific examples drawn from actual experience. Much of the material would be useful to other institutions considering strategic action to incorporate computers into all relevant areas of the accounting program.
