Abstract

Education is at a cross-roads. Now, in the final quarter of the century, educators are faced with a problem which is itself a product of the educational system. If, in music and the other arts, we could agree that our function in the pattern of general education in schools is principally to develop, in the majority, the faculties of imagination and creativity, then I think we should find ourselves in the very forefront of educational change making one of the most important contributions that can be made to the reappraisal of education as a lifelong involvement.
