Abstract All past societies had to face the fundamental challenge of adapting to periods of scarcity, difficult climatic conditions, disease, and war. A study of demographic behaviour can reveal the ways in which such historical communities faced these challenges. It is not easy, however, to measure precisely the influence and interactions between economic, social, and ecological factors. Aggregate research can mask the heterogeneity of populations, but the introduction of control variables can rapidly produce samples that are too small to be statistically significant. Event history analysis offers a powerful tool to counter this problem, and as a consequence has recently become an interesting application in the field of historical demography.
