An Art Therapy Model for use with Children Witnesses of Wife Abuse

Abstract

The emotional response of children witnesses of wife abuse is similar to post-traumatic stress syndrome. Living in an environment where power and control is maintained through increasingly drastic measures by father disturbs children's sense of safety and creates a chaotic family structure. The suggested art therapy model addresses issues common to this population and allows for a forum where children can find ways to share their stories. The validation process which occurs in the sharing challenges the shame and hopelessness in their lives and allow for the healing process to take place.
