This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book introduces important practical lessons, a reminder that empowerment is not a glorious battleground but rather a painstaking task of putting together principles and good organisation. It highlights the gains which can come from professional and user interchange. The book shows how social work, a practice which seeks to contain vulnerable and sometimes challenging people, transforms itself in the family centre and eventually links with formal educational institutions. It also show how conventional supportive and educative activities can accompany community and economic development. The book explains alive the idea of the integrated centre. It identifies a rich vein of (family) centred practice which it is hoped will provide inspiration and ideas for those who work and participate in centres, and for those who are responsible for them.
