Theatre for development is an artistic mode of production that requires a research methodology with close links to people's cultural experiences. The ethnography of performance is a process-based and participatory method that allows researchers to engage with informants in a collaborative process of exploring, reflecting and analysing the latter's situation as facilitators or catalysts instead of experts. This paper shows how this methodology is particularly suitable for studying theatre for development practice. The methodology relies on the performance dimension of a people's culture, what has come to be popularly known as ‘folk media’.
