The National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) is the largest continuing self‐reported victimization survey in the United States. It provides national estimates concerning both property and violent crime, including sexual assault, robbery, aggravated assault, simple assault, theft, burglary, and automobile theft. These estimates are consistently higher than those derived from official data sources such as Uniform Crime Reports. The NCVS also includes details on incidents of victimization that allow for multivariate analysis in exploring the causes, correlates, and consequences of victimization. Since its inception in 1972, the survey has undergone a number of revisions and redesigns that have broadened the types of victimization included (e.g., hate‐crime) and have improved on the survey's ability to capture victimization.
