Northern Renaissance copies of paintings done by contemporaries are of two types. The first type is a duplicate of a painting, made for the artist or a client, in essence a replica. The second type is a copy in which changes are made. Examples of both types are given. Special attention is paid to copies of a painting of a Modonna in Red by Rogier van der Weyden. -- AATA
