The focus of this paper is on social action by social workers acting through their professional association—or in any group of social workers. The writer analyzes certain attributes of social workers and their relationship to change, the need to apply community organization theory to action, and how to play the “political game.” He makes a strong case for militant action, and concludes that social workers can become a powerful influence by making their talents available to help poor people organize themselves for social action and proposes a professional volunteer corps for this purpose.
