The Fonck Museum holds a Mapuche silver work collection consisting of 51 items which has been exhibited for almost 17 years under inappropriate conditions, caused by a mixed up design due to space overuse and lack of a guided tour, as well as by poor conservation condition of the items. By the end of 2000, a F ONDART Project was performed. Its purpose was the renewal of the Mapuche Room, focusing in the preservation of the artifacts and in a new museographic design. The project counted on both the experience and advice of a Mapuche silver work conservator, and the participation of a numismatics specialist. Likewise, considering that silver work collection is part of a living culture, the involvement of the Mapuche community from the Valparaiso Region became essential. The foregoing research provided the necessary tools to elaborate the working plan, which was developed in two ways. On the one hand, restoring silver items to their original aspect and, on the other hand, transmitting their meaning under the museographic context.
