As indicated in the preface, the edited volume Challenges for Language Education and Policy is dedicated to Elana Shohamy, whose theories and practices hold a prominent position and exert far-reaching influence in the discipline of applied linguistics in general, and language education and policy in particular. Inspired by the critical view and scholarly endeavor of Shohamy, each contributor to this volume brings his/her innovative analysis of real-life language policy and bi/multilingual education. The 22 chapters, preceded by a preface and an introduction, are presented in four parts, linked by the theme of ‘making space for people, the language users’ in the fields of language education and policy. Part 1, ‘Restoring People to Language Assessment’ (Chapters 1–6), deals with the contexts and uses of language tests and discusses the possible harms of test results. Part 2, ‘Focusing on People in Language Policy’ (Chapters 7–10), illustrates the power of individuals (school principals, supervisors in the ministry of education, policymakers, etc.) in language education and multilingual policy. Part 3, ‘Personalizing the Public Space’ (Chapters 11–15), demonstrates how to apply a linguistic landscape framework to the analysis of language rights and power relations in public spaces. Part 4, ‘Placing People within Communities and Cultures’ (Chapters 16–22), locates people in broader contexts and addresses such issues as identity and power within communities and cultures.
