Images are structuring devices in urban planning. Different studies in recent years have shown that far from being passive reflections of the world «outthere», they should rather be seen as constructed objects working as active intermediaries in this process. Starting from these premises, it is proposed to push this argument further by investigating the efficacy of visualizations in a particular urban project. The study of different key phases in the restructuring of the center of Winterthur shows that they play an important role in defining the content and in organizing the process of the project. These results point to the importance of developing a reflexive use of visual documents in planning. This, it is argued, has, as a prerequisite, the development of a better understanding of visual communication in general.
