In initiating this series of addresses to be given at annual meetings of our Society, it has seemed to me appropriate to consider the making of a survey of the field of musicology as a whole, what we are doing in it and what may be its potentialities for growth in coming years. Such a survey would accord with what has become an axiom of our study: that everything should be studied in its context. And it seems to be all the more appropriate at the present time, now that the preliminary program of the joint meeting of our Society and the International and American Musicological Societies has been published-a program that may mark the beginning of a new era in our study and one for which the achievements of our Society and its members-especially Mantle Hood-may be partly responsible.
