In his paper on kin terms in the Polynesian protolanguages, Marck (1996) reconstructs a term, *kainarga, for descent group, but leaves it to the anthropologist to determine its specific type. Marck glosses *kainarJa as 'lineage' or 'clan' but not more than that. Whether to reconstruct it as patrilineal, matrilineal, nonunilineal, ambilineal, or something else seems beyond linguistic methods and must be argued by social anthropologists on other grounds (Marck 1996:2o6-207).
