Abstract

I will let you know what, the good nature of some (of the) people of this place, have invented to disparage your booke: (one) [a Freind] told me the other day yt he had it from one who (has) pretends to be a great Judge of bookes: yt you had taken all that was good in it; from (Des Cartes or) divers (new) late [moderne] French Authours. not only as to the notions but the manner of connexion of them; my answer againe was. that as long as I enjoyd your conversation in England: weh was when the maine body of the booke was written; to my knowledg you utterly refused to reade any bookes upon yt subject: that you might not take any other mens notions: and yt you have taken another course since yt time I did not beleive: therefore yt [if] you have fallen upon (any other) [the notions] of others, it was by a necessary treine of thoughts: since truth being but one thing hath commonly but one way to prove it: If you have any better defence then this to make: pray let me know it; & I will make [it] for you ... .1
