Twenty-four rabbits were experimentally butchered using simple unretouched flakes to test the null hypothesis that there is no relationship between tool morphology and tool performance. Treating flake morphology as independent and flake performance as dependent, a series of regression analyses was run as tests of independence. Significant correlations were found. A low resolution model is presented describing correspondences between tool morphology and functional proficiency. While these conclusions are derived from rabbit butchering data, they would seem to have logical extensions to other kinds of butchering tasks.
