The subject of this essay is the definition of a conceptual model for the description and interpretation of the territorial organisation of contemporary industrial systems. The purpose of going back to metasystemic transformations (Section 1) is to lay out the fundamental cognitive bases of the processes and “new” organisational forms of socioeconomic systems, which it appears increasingly difficult—practically and theoretically—to fit into traditional theoretical models. After this, I shall go on (Section 2) to a review of the concepts (global/local dialectic, territoriality, local development) which lie behind the idea of the network organisation of the contemporary socio-economic system. This finds its full theoretical expression in the idea of complexity (Section 3). which refers back, in turn, to the modern theory of open systems. The discussion of the metaphorical concept of network, in its genetic and structural aspects (Section 4), of dynamics and functioning (Section 5), provides, finally, the instruments for the representation of the model of network articulation of the industrial system.
