Ed. Note: On 3-4 March 1988 at New York University's Department of Performance Studies a conference was held to explore the relation between aspects of Paul Ekman's work and the way emotion is expressed in certain codified performance genres. Conference participants included Ekman, Martha Davis, Eliot D. Chapple, Marcia B. Siegel, Ann Daly, and Richard Schechner. Ekman s work over the past 30 years has centered on the expression of emotions in the human face. He has recently been researching the role of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) in emotion. Ekman is particularly interested in the relationship between emotion, its expression in the face, its physiological manifestations in the ANS, and the experience of emotion as felt by performers atd received by spectators. As one of the bases for discussion, live performances of dances from Indonesia (Java), India, China, and Japan were observed. Below is an edited version of the remarks Ekman made at the end of the conference.
