Exploring Stereo Images: A Changing Awareness of Space in the Fine Arts

Abstract

The author states that the artist is beginning to explore the perception of stereo space as a visual cue with immense potential for artistic expression. He claims that art has largely ignored the fact that man is a binocular species who perceives space stereoscopically. The author points out the analogies between visual stereo space, color perception and binaural sound perception. The possible relationship between stereo cues and biologically inherited sensitivities, on the one hand, and sensory cultural habits, on the other hand, is also examined. A brief historical excursion is made highlighting the more interesting ways in which artists have used stereoscopic media. Finally, the author describes the unique plasticity of stereo space inherent in the technique of stereoscopy which is of greater interest to the artist than its realism. Resume: L’auteur affirme que l’artiste commence aujourd’hui a explorer la perception de I’espace stereo comme un moyen visuel presentant d’immenses potentiality pour l’expression artistique. Selon lui, l’art a beaucoup trop ignore le fait que I’homme est une espece binoculaire qui percoit I’espace de facon stereoscopique. L’auteur souligne les analogies entre I’espace visuel stereoscopique, la perception de la couleur et la double perception auditive des sons. La relation possible entre les moyens stereoscopiques et, d’une part, les elements herites biologiquement de la sensibilite, d’autre part, les habitudes sensorielles culturellement acquises, est aussi etudiee. Un bref expose historique est fait, eclairant les manieres les plus inteiessantes dont les artistes ont utilise la stereoscopic Enfin, l’auteur decrit la plasticite unique de I’espace stereo, inherente a la technique de la stereoscopie, et d’un plus grand interet pour l’artiste que son realisme meme.
