This article is an attempt to reconstruct the role, aesthetic meaning and practice of pre-Islamic ceremonial music in Mandailing na Menek societyl during the period in which the raja (chieftain) institution was still politically significant, taking the village complex of Pakantan as the focus of investigation.2 It deals with but one part of the musical culture, namely, the three types of ceremonial orchestras, seen in their traditional religious context. It makes use of present-day musical evidence, nineteenth century colonial reports, and contemporary expressions of the old philosophy, art and religion, especially as expressed by the visual art design.
