In 1996 the Hawaii State Public Library System (HSPLS) contracted with a North Carolina vendor, Baker and Taylor, for the outsourcing of multiple functions including purchasing, processing, cataloging, and 100% of selection. One year later, in response to perceived deterioration in collections, Hawaii's librarians have launched a local and national campaign against the contract. This article reports on results of a survey of HSPLS librarians designed to quantify satisfaction or dissatisfaction with implementation of the B&T contract as well as elicit comments which would both clarify and augment the numeric data. This article addresses questions about the heart of librarianship and public library management as librarians discuss their reactions to the loss of a significant professional function, selection, and its effect on collections and services within their libraries.
