Jim Crow, Demon of Disorder

Abstract

rical personalities of his day, both in the United States and in Great Britain (see figs. 1 and 2). Boston Post made it official: The two most popular characters in the world at the present time are [Queen] Victoria and Crow.2 My primary concern, however, is not with the life of Tom Rice, although some account of it is necessary. Instead, I am about unearthing the Jacksonian worlds that gave Jim Crow fit, the song's audience, the social contexts that gave the song special significance, and the understandings that follow. theatrical audience for Jim Crow is perhaps the easiest to fix, for many newspapers of the day loved to look down on it in distaste, leaving a valuable historical record. One reporter went to considerable effort to describe the scene at Rice's Chatham Theatre benefit in October 1840.
