A limited literature on the retirement of scientists suggests that they do not follow the expected pattern of retirement. Data collected from 281 scientists who retired from state and small private colleges, ivy league and large state universities, and non-profit research and industrial organizations indicate that to varying degrees they continue to engage in science after retirement. Eminent scientists appear to be especially likely to continue to engage in the fundamental scientific activities of research and writing. An interpretation of the findings is offered.
