The study of black-music history and the study of the history of the Western European classical tradition (to be denoted hereafter as WECT) have proceeded side by side, but for the most part independently. The differences of subject matter, the rather fundamentally different slants on the nature of the musical object and the context of its existence, and the different motivations underlying the two kinds of study are responsible for the very different historiographical frameworks within which they have been pursued. In this paper I will focus on the historiography of the WECT and consider how it might be affected by taking as a criterion that it would embrace black-music history together with its traditional subject matter.
