This research extends the study of constituency effects on congressional voting to the religious character of House districts. Using aggregate data on membership in religious denominations, we find that the denominational composition of districts is significantly associated with members' voting records, even when district demography and members' personal characteristics are taken into account. District-level membership in theologically-conservative Protestant churches is negatively associated with liberal voting records; membership in more moderate Protestant and non-Protestant bodies is positively associated with congressional liberalism.
