In the Krst decades of the twentieth century, the nascent American experimental psychology produced numerous studies on the proportion of pleasant and unpleasant memories in memory. In this context, we analyze the emotion and memory research conducted by Margaret F. Wash- burn (1871-1939). Washburn highlighted some issues that are at the basis of current research on emotion and memory: a) the adaptive function of emotions, b) how the individual diOerences in temperament aOects emotional processing, c) high accessibility of positive memories and d) the relationship between memory and emotional regulation. Finally, we discuss possible reasons for such investigations could not be integrated into a comprehensive and cohesive theoretical framework, but did contribute to complete the motor theory of consciousness.
