This article is part of a larger research project of mine, studying posture verbs from a contrastive semantic perspective (Dutch, English, Swedish, and French). The present article is only a part of the description of Dutch. A sequel on more idiomatic cases is in preparation (“On idioms and local prototypes. The metaphorization of Dutch posture verbs”). Further experimental research has been carried out and a pilot study is being published (“Tracing referent location in oral picture descriptions”, forthc.). This manuscript is a chapter in the collective volume edited by John Newman, The Linguistics of Sitting, Standing, and Lying, which has been published by John Benjamins, 2002. The page layout of this version is not the same as the one in the published version. I ask you not to copy parts of this manuscript without correct reference to the original publication.
