An automated system for linear feature name placement which complies with cartographic quality criteria

Abstract

Lettering is of prime importance for maps, but positioning is a time-consuming process which may account for up to 50 % of the map-editing. This paper adresses the main para meters that lead positioning, and the problems entailed. Then an approach for automated road administrative name-placement is presented which takes into account these pro blems. We have implemented a research system which follows this approach. The re sults achieved so far indicate that the problem modeling we used allows to meet high quality requierements.
