'A few books have attempted theoretical inquiry. Among them are: Richard E. Young, Alton L. Becker and Kenneth L. Pike, Rhetoric: Discovery and Change (New York: Harcourt Brace, 1970) which at some points intersects with our proposed model; James L. Kinneavy, A Theory of Discourse (Englewood Cliffs, N.J.: Prentice-Hall, 1971), a compendium of current theory; and Richard Ohmann, English in America (New York: Oxford University Press, 1976) which examines the social and political functions of composition.
