In a time when “electronic technologies are radically transforming the way we read, write and remember” [from the book], Susan Howe looks at research libraries and special collections, which register history in a particular way with their material artifacts. The book includes images of archival documents from collections such as the Emily Dickinson Collection at Amherst College, the William Carlos Williams Collection at SUNY Buffalo’s Poetry Collection and the Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas papers at the Yale University’s Beinecke Library. Howe also includes images of embroidery and textile works from anonymous craftspeople, which echo the idea that writing is intimately connected to weaving and stitching.
