Geographic languages are very important medias for human beings to explore the earth environment and to exchange geographic information. In this paper, the evolution of geographic language and its characteristics are discussed based on the traditional maps, computer aided mapping, GIS and remote sensing, and virtual geographic environments (VGE). As the latest development of geographic languages, VGE is becoming a new type of geographic language which is more convenient for its users. It will also allow the general public to participate in the decision-making related to sustainable development programs. VGE is the virtual model of the regional physical and socio-economic environments, where the users of geographic information pursue the experience of being personally on the scene and of understanding beyond the confines of reality.
