Social work in rural and remote locations is about context, practice being shaped by the unique geographic, economic, political and social characteristics of the community and its members. Practising effectively with, and within, these communities entails working in a community embedded manner that respects, embraces, utilises and fosters local values, abilities and capacities. In this chapter we explore definitional criteria for rural and remote communities, examine a conceptual framework for understanding the special characteristics, contexts and issues that practice in these locations involves and outline best practice approaches.
