Aim To study the effects of humidity on painting and colored drawing of ancient architecture. Methods Painting and colored drawing of ancient Chinese architecture samples were prepared according to traditional materials and techniques. From relative humidity of 33% to 97%,the effects of humidity on the samples were discussed depending on changes of the color, gloss and weathering product compositions. Results The optimum humidity range was 55%~66%.Lead oxide, ultramarine and white lead were easier to change color and mildew, especially Lead oxide could change into white lead at high humidity(from 66%~85%) under natural light.UV spectra showed that under high humidity there was a decrease of absorption at wavelength of 274.6nm for the conjugated bonds of tung oil had been oxidized. Conclusion Preserving painting and colored drawing under optimum humidity helps to extend their life spans.
