Utilization and Impacts of Information Technology Application on End-Users in U.S. and Mexico

Abstract

In the emerging post-industrial setting, information technology is used in ways that have substantial implications for the nature of work, productivity and economic growth. Increasingly, work has become heavily dependent on information processing, abstract, cognitive, and a fusion of doing and learning. Information technology empowers workers with the tools to plan as well as execute their own work; thus, the potential to diffuse management fimctions throughout the work force. This diffusion can have strategic implications by creating a more flexible and responsive organization with a flatter structure and lower overhead costs.With the growth of end-user computing environment and flexible technology, the ultimate question for use of technology by individuals and organizations may be more related to (1) how the technology is used rather than how much it is used or what technology is chosen and (2) how the technology is impacting rather than how technology is designed or regarded. This study uses perceived measures to evaluate information systems usage and impact at the level of the individual enduser. These measures have been tested for reliability and validity. A sample of 332 responses from the U.S. (180) and Mexico (152) was used to study information technology application in the two countries; to study why computers are used by individuals and how computers impact individuals in their work. While remarkable similarities exist in results for the two countries, there are differences in the level of use for some applications. Standards for information technology usage and impact are presented.
