Structural optimization is a process made up of design cycles aimed at finding the best possible solution. At each design cycle, ultimate and/ or serviceability limit states must be checked according to the code requirements. In the United States, these requirements are generally based on the Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) methodology. This methodology uses load and resistance factors that have been developed from the modem theory of structural reliability. Therefore structural optimization and structural reliability have to be coupled in order to achieve practical optimal solutions. This chapter describes how to incorporate reliability into the structural optimization process. A framework for controlling structural reliability during the optimization process is provided. Numerical examples are presented for illustration purposes.
