Sociological stereotypes characterizing urbanization in terms of the breakdown of traditional values and social pathology are not borne out by the evidence from Serbia. The relatively smooth integration of masses of peasants into the fabric of Yugoslav urban life can be explained in part by the role played by ideas regarding kinship corporacy and associated with an earlier form of social organization. This ideology is reflected by the intense reciprocity linking urban and rural segments of the nation in a network of cooperation, and ritual and economic exchange. These ties are governed by strong moral impera- tives, and demonstrate the ability of traditional South Slav culture to adopt new forms and functions in response to the demands of a rapidly industrializing society for greater spatial and vertical mobility.
