Abstract

Yl^HAT I desire may conflict with what you * Ydesire; what I desire today may conflict with what I will desire when I am seventy. These con? flicts might be described as external in that they extend across persons or times. There may, though, be internal conflicts involving just a given person's desires at a given time. Typically, the situation will be one where, due to some contingent limitation in knowledge or ability, the agent cannot achieve what he would most like, and so is face with a more or less unpalatable choice. I have been asked to two different parties on the same night. I know both will be fun, I would like to go to both but I know that is impossible. I am forced to make a choice between them.
