What comes after Care? Taking Care of Relatives Reduces Employment Opportunities for Caregivers Sustainable The study uses a random sample of insurance biographies drawn from register data of the statutory German Pension Fund. It inquiries into the employment histories of caregivers after their care obligations have ended. A part of the caregivers stay in their job during the time they provide care to a relative. Others lost their job but manage to re-enter into employment later on. However, compared to a control group, the risk of losing once’ job is significantly higher for caregivers. The older the caregiver is or the longer the caring period lasts, the more likely it is, that caregivers are not employed anymore after their care obligations have ended. Moreover, caregivers who experienced longer gaps in their employment history before their caring period face higher risks of losing their job permanently.
