On ‘Gods’ and ‘Kings’ in the Tutorial Industry: A ‘Media Spectacle’ Analysis of the Shadow Education in Hong Kong

Abstract

There is something spectacular about the visual ecology of tutorial centre advertisements that is circulating in the mediascape of Hong Kong. It is difficult to miss these scintillating, attention-grabbing advertisements. They are everywhere in the public spaces of Hong Kong. Not only do they appear as huge billboards erected on well-trafficked avenues, and public transport such as MTR and double-decker buses, they are also circulated in social media platforms like YouTube and more traditional media formats, such as TV commercials and full-page newspaper advertisements. These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. This process is experimental and the keywords may be updated as the learning algorithm improves.
