If the “facts” of social science are effectuated by a coding system, need these facts have specifiable referents? I open with this issue and with this case study because they show that esteemed practitioners of social “science” are ready to substitute raw sources one for the other, if the method for exhibiting the contents remains unchanged. This odd swapping takes place even when the “source” material carries the ethical seriousness of an inquiry into 1930s German anti-Semitism and the causes of the Holocaust. The real referents of the coding outputs are peripheral to research. These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. This process is experimental and the keywords may be updated as the learning algorithm improves.
